THE RECORD OF THE DOTY FAMILY.
The first record of the name Doty is believed to have been found in Surrey County, England in 1066, and believed to have been derived from the Anglo-Saxon nickname "the Doughty" meaning the strong and valiant and to have been adopted as a surname by the sons of one so called.
Families of this name were to be found at early dates in English Counties, they were prominent in Social, Civic, and Military life.
The first of the family in America was Edward Doty, who came when but a youth in the Mayflower in 1620. He joined the Pilgrims at London and came with them to Plymouth, Mass. He married Faith Clark in 1635 and their children were William, Faith, Edward, John, Thomas, Samuel, Desire, Mary Elizabeth, Isaac and Joseph.

John, son of the immigrant Edward, was father of John, Edward, Jacob, Elizabeth, Isaac, Samuel, Elisha, Josiah, and Martha.
Thomas son of the immigrant Edward, resided in Middleton and was father of Hannah and Thomas.
Samuel, son of the immigrant Edward , who moved to New Jersey, was father of Samuel, Sarah, Isaac, Edward, James, Jonathan, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Joseph, Daniel, Margaret, John, and Nathaniel, this Samuel and his descendents frequently spelled their name Doughty.
Isaac,son of the immigrant Edward, frequently used the Doughty form, moved to New York and was father of Isaac, Joseph, Jacob, Solomon, James, and Samuel.
Joseph 1, youngest son of the immigrant Edward, resided at Rochester, Mass. His children were Theophilus, Elizabeth, Ellis, Joseph, Deborah, John, Mercy, Faith, and Mary.

John Doty/Doughty, son of Joseph Doty, was born about the year 1706, and was married about 1732. And Jerry Doty, his son, was born about l740, married about l762. Sam Doty, son of Jerry Doty, was born about 1771, married about 1792. Joseph Doty, son of Sam Doty, was born in 1804.
Jerry Doty/Doughty, Captain under Gen. Morgan. Battle of Cow Pen was fought on his place, and he was wounded there. Among those who distinguished themselves in the Revolutionary war were Waggonmaster General David Doty of Connecticut; Captain Samuel Doty of Pennsylvania; Lieutenant Colonel John Doughty of New Jersey and others.
Sam Doty was first settler of Warren County, Kentucky. His children were Jerry, John Daniel, Prudy, Joseph, Masten, Preston, and Featherson. Sam Doty was a Primitive Baptist Preacher. His father, Jerry, was an infidel. He moved from Kentucky to Indiana and later to Illinois, where he died. Maston and Preston died in Iowa. Preston's youngest son, Evans Doty, is a fiddler. Joseph Doty (b 1804) came from Illinois to Missouri in 1836. His children were Polly, Sam, John, Daniel, Nancy, Eli, Joseph, Edward, Hannah, Valentine, Prudy and Davis. Joseph was the first Doty known to have settled in Barry County. [Joseph Doty b: 23 JUN 1804 in KY]
