AAS - Interview with Maria Skyllas-Kazacos - Vanadium is the obvious element – everyone knows that vanadium exists in different oxidation states – and a few other elements could work, such as tungsten, molybdenum and titanium... the vanadium oxidation reduction reaction involves not only a transfer of an electron but a transfer of oxygen as well. The VO2+ has to gain an oxygen to go to VO2+, and if the carbon is too clean there aren’t any oxygen groups on the surface to allow it to grab an oxygen. Consequently it wasn’t reacting on the clean, smooth surface.   but if we started off with the soluble V(IV) sulphate to produce a 2M V(IV) solution it was possible to charge it to the V(V) state without the V(V) coming out of solution. In fact, this turned out to be the vanadium redox battery invention and this was something that could not have been predicted.

Vanadium Redox Battery - Typically, the electrolyte for the vanadium battery is 2 M vanadium sulphate in 2.5 M H2SO4, the vanadium sulphate (initially 1 M V (III) + 1 M V (IV)) being prepared by chemical reduction or electrolytic dissolution of V2O5 powder.  The UNSW breakthrough came when it was discovered that highly concentrated V(V) solutions could be prepared in sulphuric acid by the electrochemical oxidation of V(IV). By oxidising a 2 M vanadyl sulphate solution, it was possible to prepare a highly concentrated 2 M V(V) solution which, unexpectedly, did not precipitate over a reasonable temperature range. This meant that reasonable vanadium solution concentrations could be achieved for a practical systems.

NOVEL: Stabilizing Agents Enhance Power. from Goliath Industry and Business News

New South Wales University professors Michael Kazacos and Maria Skyllas Kazacos "surprisingly" found that ammonium oxalate and glycerol enhance the stability of vanadium ions by inhibiting their precipitation in supersaturated solutions enabling more powerful longer lasting vanadium redox batteries. The stabilizing agents inhibit precipitation of vanadium by adsorbing on the nuclei and preventing ions from approaching the nuclei, thereby stopping crystal growth They discovered a process of preparing an all-vanadium high energy density electrolyte solution concentrate for use in an all-vanadium redox battery...
