The basic concept is that the earth is essentially transparent to low frequency (long wavelength) electromagnetic waves. Waves on the order of the earth's diameter have a frequency of about 23 Hz. These waves will show up in magnetometer records as slow (23 Hz) variations. Many natural events (solar flares, ionospheric oscillations, sferics from lightning, etc) generate signals with low frequency components. These should propagate throught the earth and show up in correlations between magnetometers on opposite sides of the earth. Since waves can travel through the atmosphere, through the earth as guided waves, or directly, the time should unravel the path. Essentially treating the earth as a magnetic whole, with dense electromagnetic baseline (thermal radiation density at the core at 5400 Kelvin is megawatts/m^2) monitor waves passing through, not around.

The power lines on the earth surface in the United States are at distinct frequencies spread over large areas and at specific locations and times. These waves should be recorded on the opposite (or reflected) locations on the earth according to interior propagation. If you imagine that each separate electrical grid will be coupled to all other grids on the earth, then each grid should "see" the other grids. Events in any grid should show up in every other grid with appropriate time delays. Imaging an antenna a thousand miles long. What is the index of refraction of copper at 60Hz?

Earthquakes and seismic waves generate magnetic fields (and electric fields) because of piezomagnetic and piezoelectic effects). Most crystalline structures are piezoelectric and pizomagnetic, especially perovskites. So there is a clear method for estimating effects at various temperatures, pressures, chemical composition, wave frequencies (see also equations of state, earth models).
