The main issue with regard to this is that in many cases the manufacturer must know the Make, Model, and the Firmware (code) Version of a system in order to determine whether it is compliant.  The firmware information is usually found in one of two places:

• On labels attached to the ROM or EPROM chips.
• On a display, either displayed on power-up or in an 'system information' menu choice.
