The Size of the Problem

Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) - www.semichips.org
  • Chip industry distances itself from Y2K issue "However, the SIA acknowledged that a "small percentage" of semiconductors could be sensitive to the date change. They include non-volatile memory chips, the real-time clocks that regulate time in PCs, and the microcontrollers used in a range of embedded systems including industrial equipment, laser printers, microwave ovens, and automobiles. A "small percentage" in the $137 billion global semiconductor industry could mean a lot of chips, acknowledged SIA spokesman Jeff Weir. "If you're trying to size up the number of chips that might have some date-related programming it's probably in the millions, but there's no real way of knowing. Our organization keeps track of production, sales, and figures like that, but even we don't have the data to come up with an accurate guess," Weir said."

Who is Affected?

eg3.com is the oldest and largest web resource devoted to electronic design, specifically embedded systems, realtime, and DSP. Founded in late 1994, eg3.com indexes the free and non-commercial design information on the Net, summarizes the over 800 vendor companies that make up this marketplace, and organizes the content of major chip companies and third party vendors into a searchable "design tool" for EE's and designers.

ISA, the international society for measurement and control reference and product information, training, and professional development - This list of ISA Divisions is not Y2K specific, just links to some good people and organizations.  I have placed it here to give you an idea of the range of technologies and disciplines affected by Y2K.
