| Egypt has an official Y2K site, but it is very thin on
details. I have gathered some links that
give clues to their situation, but it it pretty rough. Please send suggestions for
links. - Richard Collins |
Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) is responsible
for Egypt's Y2K status reporting. Their site, http://www.capmas.gov.eg
, was not available when I was reviewing their situation to create this page
(Oct 29, 1999). Their report is available on the SIS Egyptian and UK
mirror sites.

- U.S. Economic Assistance to Egypt Over the Period 1975-1996: $ 5.4 billion - physical
infrastructure (water and wastewater systems, power generation, telecommunications, and
industry);
- Early assistance focused on the immediate needs of the economy, including clearing,
repairing and reopening the Suez Canal to restore to Egypt and the world this important
trade artery. Egypt's infrastructure also claimed early attention. Expanded electric
power, water and wastewater, grain storage, telecommunications and port
facilities became targets of assistance. Professional and institutional ties between
Egypt and the United States were rebuilt.

- ITS NOT THE CRASH; ITS THE CASH - Egypts Year 2000 problem by Drew
Dowell
- This isnt to say that Egyptian companies are moving rapidly to address the issue.
Its just that, for once, its good that most of the nations business is
conducted on paper. Egypts low computer penetration, particularly among mainframes,
and more particularly among the older mainframes that constitute the bulk of the problem,
has insulated the nation from the need to take drastic action. Most of the mainframes are
concentrated in multinationals, which get their solutions from home, and banks, which
generally have capable IT teams. Small and medium scale enterprises which run personalized
software and had established computer networks a decade ago are the most vulnerable,
although not at the level of their counterparts in the West. The paper-based public sector
is safe. "We work very well under pressure, so Im sure in the last three months
of 1999 people will get their acts together and solve the problem," says Adel Danish
of Standard Data. "Its not a huge amount of work to be done."

- The ITU Arab Region Y2K Task Force meeting was held in Amman, Jordan, in the period
20-22 April 1999. The meeting was organized jointly by the ITU Regional Office in Cairo
and the Jordan Telecommunications Company, and was hosted by a kind invitation from Jordan
Telecom. Delegates representing 13 Arab States participated in this meeting, namely:
Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan,
Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Representatives from Djibouti registered for the
participation in the meeting, but they were not able to attend.
- After completing the inventory, Telecom Egypt signed contracts for fixing the problems
by software patches or the substitution of complete switching systems. Work is currently
in progress to upgrade the systems, and some switches have already been changed. Tests are
being currently performed on switching and transmission systems, and the tests are
expected to be completed by end of June 1999. They considered alternate methods that can
be used in case of failures. Some experts will be consulted to perform network testing,
which is expected to be finished by September 1999.
