Charles Baker is believed, by
some, to have been a brother of John Baker and William Baker, Revolutionary
Soldiers, who settled in Wilkes Co., GA about 1786 near Williams Creek. John and
William are known to have had another brother who was, also, a Revolutionary
Soldier who came to Georgia. His name is not known. John, William and Charles
Baker were the only Baker men who paid taxes in Wilkes Co. in 1793. All three
paid taxes in Warren Co. in 1794. Charles’s name appeared on the 1786 list of
male members of Long Creek Baptist Church. Charles bought land on Long Creek in
1790. His land joined land of West and Barnes.
The date and place of
Charles’s birth is unknown. He died in Warren Co. before 15 Oct. 1794. His
wife, Priscilla’s, maiden name is unknown. The writer of this article thinks
she was sister of Willis and Burwell Perry of Franklin, NC and Warren Co., GA.
Priscilla married the second time to Adam Jones, Jr. in about 1801.Willis and
Burwell Perry were the administrators of the estate of Charles Baker. They were
not dismissed by the court until 1817, but, probably left the county before that
time. Recent information indicates they may have gone to Wilkinson. Co.,
Georgia.
Charles and Priscilla had, at
least, five children and perhaps more. His estate settlement mentioned fine
minor children. Three of the children were named Polly (Mary), Gilly
and Priscilla. The fourth child remains unidentified. Charles Baker, Jr.
was born in March of the year his father died.
Mary Baker (lv. ca.1786-1859)
married to Hendley Jones (1772-1848). He was the Benjamin Jones of Virginia and
Warren Co., GA. Hendley Jones was born in Virginia, but lived most of his life
within one-half mile of Long Creek Church. Hendley and Mary Baker Jones had
thirteen children whose descendants are outlined in the book, Camp, Jones and
Related Families compiled by Nell Jones Carter. Charles and Priscilla’s
daughter, Priscilla, married James Collins before 1809. It is thought
that they moved to Chattahoochee, Co., Georgia.
Charles Baker Jr. was born 25 March 1794, in Warren Co. and died in 1861 in Muscogee, Co., Ga. He married Cicilla Clarke of Jasper Co., Ga. The earliest information about Charles is from the book, History of Opelika and Her Agricultural Tributary Territory by Rev. F. L. Cherry Robert E. Lamb of Columbus, Ga. furnished the information of Charles Baker, Jr. and descendants that are included in Nell Carter’s book.

Charles Baker and his family lived in the same are in Wilkes/Warren County as my ancestors who were also active in the Long Creek Church. The Benjamin and Hendley Jones mentioned in her piece are, as far as I know, not part of my Jones family. Adam Jones, Jr. became the guardian of Charles Baker's minor children when he died. Adam Jones, Jr. was the son of my ggguncle, Adam Jones, Sr. who was pastor of the Long Creek Church from 1807 - 1825.
